OK, now THIS looks much better than WiME's A3! The A3 is pretty, but does not have a replaceable battery. This IKwear does, and it also looks much sturdier. When I finally out grow the Z1 that I have coming, and the i3 that I'll be using for backup, then this puppy might be the next thing I pick up.
When I changed from Z1 to AW414 (which is similar to this IKwear), the Z1 felt like the middle ages. The AW414 is ways better! But has some bugs too, like all watch phones.
I damaged a flatcable on my ZGPAX S5, the one that connects the SIM card to the main board during yet another hacking experiment. The SIM is no longer recognized, so I cannot make calls or use the data connection. There is no way this can be fixed without replacing that part, and nobody sells spare parts, so my only option is to buy a new watch phone. Unless of course, someone has a broken S5 that they want to sell for spare parts ;)
I found someone in Holland who had the S5 for a good price (considering there is zero risk for taxes), but unfortunately he no longer has them in stock. He offers the IKwear instead, and although I do not like the design as much, it is the exact same hardware as the S5 and it seems to do a few things better (no front-facing camera, and as far as I can see, the microphone might be placed in a way that it will not suffer from the typical buzzing problem). So, I'll check it out…
The IKwear has finally arrived. The Dutch seller proved to not have it in stock, but drop-shipped it from HK instead, and I had to pay import taxes on top, but he promises to refund those.
It is probably all the same ingredients as the S5, but it looks better designed. Cell phone signal reception is much better, and there is none of the annoying buzzing sound during calls. The screen has no dead zone. The standard battery is 700mAh (although it seems this depends on where you buy it) and the battery indicator seems correct. The parts seem to fit better together and the screen is not slightly loose as on the S5.
There are indeed two hidden capacitive buttons at the bottom of the display: a ‘menu’ button at the left, and a ‘back’ button to the right. This is both practical and annoying at times, because it is easy to accidentally hit the return button.
One sore thumb is the hideous default clock face, which is so poorly designed that it is impossible to accurately read the time on it. Luckily it can be changed. The clock lacks a date display though.
I don't like the looks that much, but it looks better in reality than on the photos. Unlike some other people here, I prefer functionality to design ;)
When comparing the ZGPAX S5 and the IKwear IK8, the IK8 is clearly the better of the two. If the Abardeen F80 doesn't prove to be as good as I hope, I'll keep the IKwear and sell my S5 after I have fixed its SIM connector.
Of course, you can expect a link to a review page here in the near future. It will be pretty short this time because of the similarities with the S5.
Here you go: my review of the IK8!
Thanks for the review. Maybe I should by this watch phone. My AW421rx is having troubles: corrosion, but also: the mic problem is back after some months (suddenly, the one that is calling my, can't here me any more, it happens regurarly, 1 of 2 calls! No idea why or how to solve it.)
But why you plan to resell it if it's so good?
I hope the Abardeen F80 will be even better (I am still waiting for it, but according to tracking info it is in the country already). If it is, there is no point in keeping the S5 and IK8. So it is not certain yet whether I will sell the IK8 or not.
I look forward to your Abardeen F80 review!
